Kelly’s of Cornwall nut allergy information

Q: Why are you introducing nut-flavoured ice cream?

A: We are introducing a new range of flavours and two of these will include nuts (hazelnuts) as an ingredient. The new range has been developed after listening to customer feedback and demand for a wider range of flavours.

Q: What nuts are you using in the new nut flavours?

A: Hazelnuts are used in one of our take home flavours and one of our parlour flavours. These flavours are not on sale until after 15th February in selected supermarkets. We can confirm that we are not using peanuts in our products.

Q: Have you considered nut allergy sufferers in your decision to make these new products?

A: Yes and we are really sorry about the impact this will have on nut allergy sufferers and their families. Although only two new flavours will use nuts as an ingredient, as a precautionary measure, all packaging that now leaves the factory states that it comes from a factory that uses nuts – and we of course understand that the choice to buy our products is at the buyer’s discretion.

Q: Have you used nuts before in the factory?

A: In the past, all of Kelly’s of Cornwall ice creams have been made in a nut free environment, suitable for people with nut allergies.

Q: Can’t you make the products containing nuts at another facility?

A: At the moment, we aren’t in a position to have a nut-free facility. Provenance is important to the brand along with its genuine Cornish credentials of being produced in Bodmin, Cornwall with local milk and clotted cream.

Q: When will the nuts be introduced to the factory?

A: The new flavours, including the two flavours using nuts as an ingredient, will be in selected supermarkets from 15th February 2016. Production has begun and so all packaging that now leaves the factory clearly states that it comes from a factory that uses nuts.

Q: What is the risk to nut allergy consumers?

A: The risk is minimal as the nuts used are segregated and controlled all the way through the process to ensure that there is no risk of the nuts affecting our other ice cream products. During production of flavours including nuts, no other products are manufactured, and the products with nuts are sealed and isolated. All equipment is thoroughly cleaned and tested prior to being used in connection to the manufacturing of other Kelly’s products.
